The Titles of Jesus in Christology: Their History in Early Christianity (Library of Theological Translations)

The Titles of Jesus in Christology: Their History in Early Christianity (Library of Theological Translations)by Ferdinand HahnJames Clarke & Co

Hahn's famous work on the history of the titles of Jesus is a detailed examination of the Christological traditions which led to the use of names for Jesus long embedded in the life of Judaism, the Palestinian primitive Church, and in pre-Pauline Christianity. Hahn says: "The titles of majesty have been dealt with independently of one another so far as overlappings, and contacts have not emerged in the history of the tradition itself. A convergence of results has been asked for only in conclusion. It has seemed advisable to distinguish as carefully as possible from one another the different Christological conceptions, as also the stages of tradition within the several views, in order that peculiarities may not be overlooked. In the treatment of the five titles of majesty much could only be sketched, and all the problems could not be taken into account in an equally detailed way. Where a question arises that is essential for a judgement of the whole, an attempt has been made to give a closer argument." Hahn's approach has been followed by many later scholars and The Titles of Jesus in Christology is seen as a key work in the development Christological ideas.

Christless Christianity: The Alternative Gospel of the American Church

Christless Christianity: The Alternative Gospel of the American Churchby Michael HortonBaker Books

Is it possible that we have left Christ out of Christianity? Is the faith and practice of American Christians today more American than Christian? These are the provocative questions Michael Horton addresses in this thoughtful, insightful book. He argues that while we invoke the name of Christ, too often Christ and the Christ-centered gospel are pushed aside. The result is a message and a faith that are, in Horton's words, "trivial, sentimental, affirming, and irrelevant." This alternative "gospel" is a message of moralism, personal comfort, self-help, self-improvement, and individualistic religion. It trivializes God, making him a means to our selfish ends. Horton skillfully diagnoses the problem and points to the solution: a return to the unadulterated gospel of salvation.

Heresy: Ten Lies They Spread About Christianity

Heresy: Ten Lies They Spread About Christianityby Michael CorenSignal

Bestselling author Michael Coren explodes popular myths about the history, beliefs, and culture of Christianity.

Michael Coren explores why and how Christians and Christian ideas are caricatured in popular media as well as in sophisticated society. He takes on, and debunks, ten great myths about Christianity: that it supports slavery, is racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-intellectual, anti-Semitic, provokes war, resists progress, and is repressive and irrelevant. In a climate that is increasingly as ignorant of Christianity as it is good at condemning it, Coren gives historical background, provides examples of how these attacks are made, and explains the reality of the Christian response, outlining authentic Christian beliefs.

Psychology & Christianity: Five Views (Spectrum Multiview Books)

Psychology & Christianity: Five Views (Spectrum Multiview Books)IVP Academic

How are Christians to understand and undertake the discipline of psychology? This question has been of keen interest (and sometimes concern) to Christians because of the importance we place on a correct understanding of human nature. Psychology can sometimes seem disconnected from, if not antithetical to, Christian perspectives on life. How are we to understand our Christian beliefs about persons in relation to secular psychological beliefs? This revised edition of a widely appreciated text now presents five models for understanding the relationship between psychology and Christianity. All the essays and responses have been reworked and updated with some new contributors including the addition of a new perspective, the transformative view from John Coe and Todd Hall (Biola University). Also found here is David Powlison (Westminster Theological Seminary) who offers the biblical counseling model. The levels-of-explanation model is advanced by David G. Myers (Hope College), while Stanton L. Jones (Wheaton College) offers an entirely new chapter presenting the integration model. The Christian psychology model is put forth by Robert C. Roberts (Baylor University) now joined by Paul J. Watson (University of Tennesee, Chattanooga). Each of the contributors responds to the other essayists, noting points of agreement as well as problems they see. Eric L. Johnson provides a revised introduction that describes the history of Christians and psychology, as well as a conclusion that considers what might unite the five views and how a reader might evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each view. Psychology and Christianity: Five Views has become a standard introductory textbook for students and professors of Christian psychology. This revision promises to keep it so.

Christianity Rediscovered

Christianity Rediscoveredby Vincent J. DonovanOrbis Books

This profound and thought-provoking book is one of the classics of modern missionary writing. Superficially just a good missionary story, about how one man brought a number of groups of Masai people in east Africa to Christian faith, it is something much more than that. For in what the author says about the method and content of evangelism; the meaning of the eucharist; and the nature of ministry, we are led back to the question our understandings of the mission of the church in all its contexts. For Donovan, his experiences in Africa meant a total reappraisal of the meaning of his faith, and therefore a rediscovery of his Christianity. His book, which is written with moving simplicity, continues to represent a provocative challenge to all those engaged in issues of evangelism and multiculturalism.

The Juvenilization of American Christianity

The Juvenilization of American Christianityby Thomas BerglerWm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company

Pop worship music. Falling in love with Jesus. Mission trips. Wearing jeans and T-shirts to church. Spiritual searching and church hopping. Faith-based political activism. Seeker-sensitive outreach. These now-commonplace elements of American church life all began as innovative ways to reach young people, yet they have gradually become accepted as important parts of a spiritual ideal for all ages. What on earth has happened?

In The Juvenilization of American Christianity Thomas Bergler traces the way in which, over seventy-five years, youth ministries have breathed new vitality into four major American church traditions -- African American, Evangelical, Mainline Protestant, and Roman Catholic. Bergler shows too how this "juvenilization" of churches has led to widespread spiritual immaturity, consumerism, and self-centeredness, popularizing a feel-good faith with neither intergenerational community nor theological literacy. Bergler’s critique further offers constructive suggestions for taming juvenilization.
